Vladimir Verbitsky, a highly regarded conductor from Russia, recently became an Australian citizen at a citizenship ceremony after a performance with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) at the Perth Concert Hall. Mr Verbitsky was conferred by the former Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans.
Born in Leningrad (St Petersburg), Mr Verbitsky graduated from the Leningrad Conservatoire in piano and conducting. After holding several Chief Conductor positions in Russia, it was in 1986 when he was first introduced to his Australian audience during a USSR State Symphony Orchestra Australasian tour. At the end of the tour Mr Verbitsky was invited to be the Music Director of Orchestra Victoria.
Mr Verbitsky has developed a special relationship with musicians and music lovers in Western Australia through his work with the WASO for over 22 years. Mr Verbitsky was appointed conductor laureate of the orchestra in 1997.
'Becoming an Australian citizen shows commitment and loyalty to this country and a desire to share a common future. It is with great pleasure that I welcome Mr Verbitsky as he takes this exciting step,' Senator Evans said.
It was the Australian people, environment and climate that drew Mr Verbitsky to Australia. 'It's very exciting for me to become an Australian citizen and to celebrate my commitment to this country. I truly love Australia and celebrating this exciting step on stage with my colleagues at the WASO will make it all the more special.' Mr Verbitsky said.
'Australia has been enriched by the cultures and traditions of these new citizens and I am certain that Mr Verbitsky will continue to make a significant contribution to our rich cultural diversity,' said Senator Evans.
