Affirmation ceremonies

An affirmation ceremony is a short event at which any Australian can make a public statement affirming their loyalty to Australia and its people. Participation in an affirmation ceremony is voluntary and everyone is welcome. Non-Australian citizens can also join in from the second line of the affirmation. Affirmation ceremonies enhance awareness of Australian citizenship and promote a sense of pride and belonging to the Australian community.

The Australian citizenship affirmation

The pledge made by all new citizens at their Australian citizenship ceremony is the basis of the Australian citizenship affirmation.

History of the affirmation

The first affirmation ceremony was held in NSW on 26 January 1999, as part of an Australia Day citizenship ceremony.

Hosting an affirmation ceremony

Anyone can hold an affirmation ceremony - individuals, families, schools, organisations or community groups.
