History of the affirmation
The first affirmation ceremony was held in NSW on 26 January 1999, as part of an Australia Day citizenship ceremony. The date marked the 50th anniversary of Australian citizenship. The ceremony proved very successful and popular.
In February 2000, the Australian Citizenship Council recommended that councils conduct affirmation ceremonies for all Australians, to assist in promoting citizenship in the community. The Government accepted the Council's recommendation and encourages the conduct of affirmation ceremonies at suitable occasions. The affirmation ceremony is a way to increase awareness of the value and importance of citizenship among all Australians.
