Australian Citizenship Day
When is Australian Citizenship Day?
We celebrate Australian Citizenship Day each year on 17 September.
What is Australian Citizenship Day?
The Australian Government introduced this special day in 2001.
The day is an opportunity for all of us to take pride in our citizenship and reflect on the meaning and importance of being Australian. The day is a chance for all of us to think about the changes that shaped our nation. We also reflect on the role we play in building Australia and shaping our future. We think about what unites us as Australians. This is a time to celebrate our democratic values and commitment to a fair go, equality and respect for each other.
Read about fellow Australians who demonstrate their commitment to these values and dedication to their fellow citizens.

Australian Citizenship Day celebrations
We celebrate Citizenship Day in many ways. They include citizenship ceremonies, picnics, meeting new people to Australia and other get togethers. As well as celebrating citizenship, the activities encourage eligible permanent residents to take out Citizenship. Only then can they participate fully in our democratic society.
You can get involved in the national celebrations or organise an event for your school, organisation, group or community.
