Security checking

What is the new provision about security?

The new provisions in the Australian Citizenship Act 2007 prohibit the approval of a citizenship applicant who is assessed by ASIO as a risk to the security of Australia. This will apply to all applications, that is, for citizenship by descent, by conferral and for resumption.

Will the new provision about security checking mean that it will take longer for me to become a citizen?

Not necessarily. The Client Service Charter provides details on service standard for processing an application for Australian citizenship. However, it is possible that security checks may sometimes result in some applications taking slightly longer to process.

The final legal step in the journey to become an Australian citizen, for most people is to make a Pledge of Commitment at a citizenship ceremony.Generally, you will be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony at your local council within 3 months of being approved, although waiting times can vary. This will not change.
