Simplified citizenship application process

Main content

The citizenship application process for permanent residents changed on 9 November 2009. For most applicants it is now a simpler process needing only one visit to the department. Previously, most applicants came to the department to sit a test (if applicable) and then again to lodge their citizenship application.

You are now required to first lodge an application, either electronically or by post. Once we receive your application, we will provide you with a citizenship appointment. It is at this appointment that you will sit a test or have a citizenship interview, whichever is applicable to you.

This change streamlines the application process and provides more timely outcomes for clients.

Read this notice if you sat and passed the citizenship test before 9 November 2009 and now wish to lodge an application for citizenship.
