Offences
Citizenship legislation prohibits the approval of a citizenship application in a number of circumstances relating to criminal offenses.
These prohibitions apply only to applications for citizenship by conferral.
National Security
Citizenship legislation prohibits the approval of a citizenship applicant who is assessed by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation as a risk to the security of Australia. Certain exceptions apply for stateless people.
This applies to all applications (citizenship by descent, adoption under the Hague Convention, conferral and for the resumption of Australian citizenship).
Identity
Citizenship legislation prohibits the approval of a citizenship application for an applicant whose identity cannot be verified.
This applies to all applications (citizenship by descent, adoption under the Hague Convention, conferral and for the resumption of Australian citizenship).
It also applies to applications for evidence of Australian citizenship.

Former citizens
Citizenship legislation prohibits the approval of a citizenship application for a period of 12 months since the person ceased to be a citizen.
This applies to applications for citizenship by descent, adoption under the Hague Convention and conferral.
