Child of a former Australian citizen

Main content

If one of your parents lost their Australian citizenship on acquisition of another citizenship before you were born, you may be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship, provided you are of good character.

You will need to produce evidence that before your birth:

  • one of your parents was an Australian citizen, and
  • evidence of that parent losing their Australian citizenship by acquiring the citizenship of another country as an adult before 4 April 2002.

Your Australian citizenship options

Children of former Australian citizens who satisfy the eligibility requirements apply for Australian citizenship using Form 1290 Australian citizenship – Other situations.
