I was born in Papua before Independence in 1975. Am I eligible for Australian citizenship?
You are eligible if you were born in Papua before 16 September 1975 and meet the following requirements:
- one of your natural parents was born in Australia as we now know it**
- your parent was an Australian citizen at the time of your birth
and - you are of good character.

Note: ** Australia as we now know it includes the six states, the internal territories of Northern Territory, Australian Capital Territory, the Jervis Bay Territory and the external territories including Norfolk Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island.
How do I apply for citizenship by conferral?
The application process is the same as for people applying for conferral who are not required to take a test (Other situations). However, please note the documentation requirements below.

You are not required to attend a citizenship ceremony.
Are my children eligible for Australian citizenship by descent?
They are not eligible to become Australian citizens by descent because you were not an Australian citizen when they were born.
