Step 2: Application process – General eligibility


To begin the application process, you should check if you are eligible for any fee concessions or exemptions.

Citizenship test

If you apply for citizenship under the general eligibility criteria, you must have passed the citizenship test before you lodge your application. If you have not passed the citizenship test before you lodge your application, your application is likely to be refused and you may not be entitled to any refund of your application fee.

Application fee

The application fee for conferral of Australian Citizenship - general eligibility is $AUD240.

Concession fees

A concession fee is available to applicants who have a permanent financial disadvantage and are recipients of certain pensions from Centrelink or the Department of Veterans' Affairs. The fee payable is $AUD40.

Evidence of eligibility for a fee concession is required.

Fee exemptions

There are two categories of applicants who are exempt from paying the fee:

Note: You may be exempt from the fee if you have previously applied but were refused because you did not meet the residence requirement and you re-applied within three months of becoming residentially eligible.

Evidence of eligibility for exemption from payment of a fee is required. If you are eligible for a concession or exemption fee, you cannot apply online.
